The Sorting Hat.
Wednesday, September 1, 2010
Twitter trending topics reminded me that today, first of September, is the beginning of term for Hogwarts. Reading Nen Lin’s conversation with her friends about which house they want to be in brought to mind this post that I had come up with some months ago on the four Hogwarts houses. And at this point, I better let you know that I am a shameless Potterphile that has used to have a lot of time on her hands! It started during college; I don’t remember how – it amazes me how some details of the most obscure, trivial things stick in my memory; while important things like coursework constantly slip my mind! – but it was Economics. Ms Joanna was still teaching us at this time, and so I can easily see how we could have digressed from production possibility frontier curves to Harry Potter. Nicole Lim declared, “I am such a Slytherin!” and Trishna said, “I think I’m in Hufflepuff.” and that was what set us off. Ms Joanna was declared a Ravenclaw and everyone else dumped me in Ravenclaw too. (I really have no idea why lah, considering how my results turned out.) But it got me thinking – could every one of us fit into the four Hogwarts houses? The criteria for each house seems limited, but when I thought about it, if you expand the information given, the houses cover a broad range of temperaments and personalities. SOOO I did just that – I referred to information from the series, particularly the Sorting Hat’s songs, and came up with a set of distinct personality traits that apply to each Hogwarts house. I did this for fun, but also because I’m tired of everyone fitting into Gryffindor every time I take a Potter quiz. The other houses deserve more credit! I ran this by my sister and Sheng Hoay and they’ve had a laugh. And, just because the Sorting Feast will be taking place tonight, here it is for you to laugh at and see where you might fit in at this magical, fantastical but purely imaginary school. Oh, and it is perfectly okay if you seem to be a stretch across all four houses. DISCLAIMER: I don’t know how to write one, but basically all this material is property of JK Rowling’s and I do not claim to own any of her characters or the storyline. I’ve just extrapolated on what she’s written. Like fanfiction only. Gryffindor “You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart” Brave, sometimes to the point of recklessness. Translation: People who have ADD, simply cannot sit still; action-orientated doers; jocks; not necessarily concerned about the pursuit of knowledge. Hermione was incredibly and certainly a clear doer, hence her placement in Gryffindor instead of Ravenclaw. If you’re someone who has to act when they see something that must be done, you have the most defining trait of a Gryffindor. Most of the people I met at the Congress are Gryffindors. * Hufflepuff “You might belong in Hufflepuff, Where they are just and loyal, Those patient Hufflepuffs are true, And unafraid of toil” Hard-working, friendly, loyal, and non-judgemental. Translation: People tend to think that Hufflepuff equates to being blur and/or pompous like Ernie MacMillan, but let’s cut these guys some slack. I think Hufflepuff is the most awesome house ever and its house colour being yellow has nothing to do with it, I swear. Well, maybe it does. Anyway in addition to the very obvious descriptions from the book, these people are very friendly to everyone and generally well-liked. They work hard and always believe in the best of others. Personalities are quite generic. Innocent, willing to believe in happy endings; yet also tough and unbreakable. It’s not a bad thing to be a Hufflepuff – they’re some of the nicest people around. I don’t care what you think, but to my mind THIS is my house. :P * Ravenclaw “Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw, If you’ve a ready mind, Where those of wit and learning, Will always find their kind.” Intelligence, cleverness, knowledge, and wit are prized traits. Translation: People who love learning for the sake of learning; highly logical – can reason away everything! Not overly concerned with action; tend to look down on brawn and traits such as over-enthusiasm and other Gryffindor/Hufflepuff traits. Believe me, I know people like this. *coughDEBATERScough* * Slytherin “Or perhaps in Slytherin, You’ll make your real friends, Those cunning folk use any means, To achieve their ends.” Ambitious, cunning, and achievement-oriented. They also have highly developed senses of self-preservation. Translation: The above description pretty much says it all. To add on, they oppose Gryffindor’s action-orientation trait. Like Gryffindors they may involve themselves in many activities, but most of the time it’s only because they want to be recognized for it. People who want to achieve a lot fit in here; they think of themselves above others. And let’s not deny it – in the race for universities and colleges and scholarships, many of us have fit in this house, stretching ourselves thin. Now you know what I do in my free time; and none of it is terribly original… but what the hell, it’s Harry Potter. I must stop wasting time because two things are very overdue – my post on Istanbul/London and my creative critical essay for English Lit coursework. The latter was due today! But before that I dare you to tell me which house(s) you think you’re in. Please do criticize and/or add things on, because I’m no psychologist. OKAY NOW I CIAO. FOR REAL. But when I come back I want to see my chatbox spammed with nice things. :)
INTRODUCING
Name: Louise
13 April 1992
You can only call me Lulu if you don’t think the name’s funny.
I am a member of the Smiley Conspiracy and a proud ex-CHS-ian, graduating class of 2009. Now doing A-Levels at HELP University College. Is proudly Malaysian, but doesn’t look like it and is proud of that too.
This is the 7th time I am editing this about section of the blog this year; I have sort of accepted that my personality is ever-evolving, ever-changing, therefore rendering my moods as volatile as the weather. But just as there are some things that have stood untouched across the centuries by harsh weather, so there are some things with me that remain ever the same: a belief that to live is to learn, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks.
What I love also remains constant. I love good food, dancing, fresh experiences, open minds and friendly people, all of which can be found in the wonderful wonderful city that is Istanbul. I love musicals, plays, good books, stickers, owls, colourful wrapping paper, hugs and kisses, chocolates, almost any music from the 17th to the 21st century, intense debates and post-it notes.
Fictional characters I have been compared to (in terms of personality) are Piglet from Winnie The Pooh and Kelsi from High School Musical.
I dream of finishing this list [29/8/2010: list is undergoing revamp!], and my secret ambition is to become a hairdresser or bartender. Unfortunately I’m also incredibly kiasu, so I’m going to go to university just to show everyone that I can. But want to go to uni also because I love learning lah!
Words that describe me are impulsive, impetuous, quixotic, sanguine, quirky, bewildered, kiasu and hodgepodge. The last one also refers to my sense of fashion.
*GRINS* :D
